Lori Raper

"True growth happens from the inside out."

The Aspen Series is inspired by the remarkable aspen trees that flourish across Colorado. Lori is drawn not only to their striking texture and movement, but also to what they represent: individuality within unity. Though each tree appears separate, all are connected through a vast, shared root system—a metaphor for human connection and resilience.

Visually, this series explores bold contrasts—primarily black and white—along with evolving textures and subtle tones of brown. Recent works also incorporate mixed media elements affixed to the lids, further deepening the connection to nature.

In a departure from traditional pottery techniques, these vessels are formed from the inside out, mirroring the process of personal growth. What might be seen as flaws—thin walls, even small intentional tears—are embraced as symbols of vulnerability and authenticity. Just as stretch marks tell a story of growth, so do these subtle marks in clay.

Every pot, like every person, holds its own form of beauty. Imperfect. Honest. Unique. Just like the aspens.
